Diplomatic French

A progressive, tailor-made programme that enables students to develop their proficiency in French by practicing a formal terminology to discuss international topics

Lessons: 20 general French morning lessons + 10 private diplomatic French afternoon lessons per week

Levels: elementary to advanced, equivalent at least to level A2 of the Council of Europe’s Common European Framework of Reference (see levels)

Course begins: every Monday (see dates)

Timetable: 9.30 to 12.45 with a 15 minute break, Monday to Friday + 1.5 hours private lessons every afternoon from 14.00

Duration: minimum 1 week with no time limit

Target profile: The programme is suitable for students interested in a career in diplomacy or for professionals who already work in this field (ambassadors, officials from international organisations, etc.) or foreign nationals intending to study in this field (political science, higher education in international relations, etc.)

The course can be tailored according to the student’s level, requirements and specific sphere of interest:

  • study the French language in diplomatic contexts to learn the style of language used in documents pertaining to international relations (resolutions, minutes of hearings, correspondence, etc.), develop vocabulary and master a more formal terminolgy.
  • observe diplomatic communications to learn the characteristics of “diplomatic language”, to identify what is implied, double-meanings, understatements, irony and euphemism and other rhetorical figures of speech. Learn to speak in public in a formal situation: conferences, meetings, lunches and cocktails.
  • study articles and reports on Europe, French-speaking communities and the world with a view to discussing topical subjects from a cross-cultural perspective.

Diplomatic French - objectives and methodology

  • focusing on the world of international relations, students work on press articles and other documents that deal with French-speaking communities, Europe and the world
  • studying administrative and diplomatic style to improve written and oral expression enables students to improve proficiency in speaking and debating in a formal context
  • a cross-cultural approach to communication

General French - objectives and methodology

  • the practice of spoken French in communicative situations and a cultural approach to the language
  • development of linguistic proficiency (written and oral expression / written and oral comprehension / interpersonal communication)
  • communicative methods combining individual development and group dynamics (group work, role plays, etc.)

Groups

  • single-level groups, 8 to 14* students maximum, ensure easy participation and a true group dynamic as well as individual attention from the teacher
    *Occasionally, this number may be exceeded by up to 3 due to an unforeseen student placement

Teaching aids

  • French as a foreign language manual provided, genuine documents, audio/video, press, French songs, etc.
